Dakar, Senegal, in West Africa, is a city that lives in harmonious rhythm — the percussion of the drums, the call of the muezzin and the sound of church bells echoing over the rooftops, the vibrant energy of its streets, the voices of its markets, the flow of the ocean that surrounds it.
Dakar, with its openness and diversity, offers the world a model of coexistence at a time when it is most needed. Beyond its sounds and movements lies a philosophy that defines its essence: Teranga, the Senegalese spirit of welcome, tolerance, and generosity. "Teranga" is not just about hospitality — it is the ability to embrace the other without judgment, to open one’s home, table and heart. It is here that the old adage finds new resonance:
“Before you judge a person, walk a mile in their shoes.”
In this exhibition, painted Crocs, a footwear worn throughout much of Africa, become the canvas of this rhythm and philosophy. These shoes — painted by five Senegalese artists — are not only meant to be worn; they are also meant to be contemplated and cherished as works of art. Each pair serves as a vessel of creativity, empathy, and imagination, carrying fragments of Dakar’s vibrancy and all-embracing spirit.
Curated by Rémy Mallet of DakArtNews and hosted online by CARAVAN, this exhibition invites you to walk — or simply to look — through the eyes of Dakar. Whether worn or displayed, these shoes carry forward a message: understanding begins when we step, literally or figuratively, into another’s journey.
Each pair of original painted Crocs costs USD $300, plus shipping.
