FAQs
REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA IN THE CAUCASUS:
“A Journey to the Crossroads of Cultures and Creativity”
What passport and visa information do I need to travel to Georgia?
U.S. citizens must have a valid passport with at least one blank page for entry into Georgia. No tourist visa is required for stays of up to 365 days.
How much walking will there be?
Our journey involves a good bit of walking, including historic neighborhoods, archaeological sites, monasteries, churches and uneven or cobblestone surfaces. Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended. Some sites also involve steps, hills or uneven terrain.
What kind of hotel accommodations will we be staying in?
We stay in four- or five-star hotels, selected for comfort, location and character. Our primary Tbilisi hotel is the Radisson Blu Hotel, Tbilisi.
What if I have dietary restrictions?
If you have allergies or other dietary restrictions, please let us know in advance. Georgian cuisine includes a wide variety of breads, cheeses, vegetables, meats and other local specialties, and we will do our best to accommodate dietary needs. We also recommend bringing extra snacks if you have significant dietary restrictions.
What kind of food can I expect in Georgia?
Food is an important part of Georgian culture and hospitality. Throughout the journey we will enjoy traditional Georgian dishes, local specialties, breads, cheeses and seasonal foods, along with opportunities to share generous meals with Georgian hosts.
Will we be drinking wine?
Wine is deeply woven into Georgian culture, and Georgia has one of the world's oldest winemaking traditions, dating back more than 8,000 years. We will visit a winery and learn about traditional qvevri winemaking, in which wine is made in large clay vessels buried underground. Non-alcoholic options will also be available.
Can I drink the water in Georgia?
Tap water is generally considered safe to drink in Georgia, including Tbilisi. Bottled water will also be available throughout our journey.
What kind of power adapter do I need for Georgia?
Georgia uses Type C and Type F electrical outlets, with a standard voltage of 220–240V. Travelers from the United States will generally need a plug adapter, and devices that are not dual-voltage will also require a voltage converter.
What currency can I use in Georgia?
The official currency is the Georgian lari (GEL). Credit cards are widely accepted in Tbilisi and other larger cities, although we recommend carrying some Georgian currency for smaller purchases, markets and more rural areas. ATMs are readily available, including at Tbilisi International Airport and at our hotel. Travelers do not need to obtain Georgian currency before arriving in Georgia.
Should I purchase telephone and internet services for my trip?
Wi-Fi will be available at our hotels and many restaurants and other locations. Communication apps such as WhatsApp will work wherever Wi-Fi or cellular data is available. You may also wish to contact your telephone provider about international roaming or consider an international eSIM.
What should I pack? Is there a dress code in Georgia?
We recommend casual, comfortable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Because our journey includes churches, monasteries and other sacred spaces, modest and respectful clothing is appropriate. Shoulders and knees should generally be covered when visiting religious sites. A light jacket or layers are also recommended, as temperatures can vary depending on the season and altitude.
Will there be opportunities to meet local people?
Absolutely. Meaningful human encounters are an important part of the CARAVAN experience. We will meet Georgian hosts, artists, religious leaders, and others who can offer personal perspectives on Georgia's culture and traditions.
What is your cancellation and refund policy?
The $500 deposit due upon submission of registration documents is nonrefundable unless the journey is cancelled or rescheduled.
Payments are 50% refundable up to six months before the journey begins; after that, any refund will depend on someone else taking your place on the journey. Alternatively, you may request to join us on a future journey within twelve months, with your installments minus the deposit and any non-refundable deposits made by the supplier credited toward that tour. We strongly recommend that all participants purchase comprehensive trip cancellation and interruption insurance.
