The vast archival memory of humanity is inherited genetically; the feeling of fear is passed down to us through a unique genetic code from our earliest ancestors. They feared and revered nature, seeing it as both a force to dread and a deity to honor. Now, following the age of agriculture and machinery, much of humanity has lost its fear and reverence for nature. On the contrary, many have redefined their relationship with nature – exploiting its resources to the brink of devastation. Humanity has forgotten the image of the great flood that our ancestors endured, a catastrophe that seems destined to revisit humanity once more. Humanity is calling for Noahs of our time, to build great arks and save us once again

People on earth are wandering, lost and searching for guidance. Some in the crowd are looking up at the sky in confusion and others are staring straight ahead. Above them, Noah is watching them from the sky. He is riding a cloud, flying above them and observing the majestic view. As he looks down on the vast scene below, witnessing earth and humanity’s journey, he reflects on what mankind has done to Mother Earth across the span of time and space.

Divine light, breaks through the clouds with a message from the Creator, guiding and leading humanity toward its destined path. Within this light lies both a warning and a sense of foreboding, cautioning against the natural disasters that shape the earth. Humanity observes this light, praying for mercy in the face of such overwhelming forces.

Modern society takes refuge in Noah’s Ark, seeking shelter after the earth has been flooded and devasted. Much time has passed since the catastrophe. Eventually, in response to heartfelt prayers, God sends a small white cloud as a symbol of hope, reflecting forgiveness. This cloud will soon pour forth rain upon the barren land. And the tree will grow again, offering shade to humanity and giving life another opportunity to flourish again.

The earth is vast; enormous and overwhelming. In the beginning, Adam lived in harmony with creation and all its elements. Depicted here is one of Adam’s descendants, carrying rocks from the earth with great precision. He journeys with them on top of his head, trying to keep them balanced for fear that they may fall and collapse. These rocks represent all the elements of life, both living and non-living. They symbolize what humanity today must hold dear and strive to keep balanced in both mind and heart.

In times of great crises, the large human family unites, embraces and strives to survive. They reflect on their past, take a moment to breathe, and rise again to rebuild civilization. Here the human family is embracing one another in a circle, symbolizing wholeness, forgiveness, and love. They share in a moment of genuine sincerity, stripped of ego, pausing amidst a vast, expansive land that is awaiting their work to bring it back to life again.

A scene of devastation: the moon has fallen to earth, and life as we know it has collapsed. Millions of people are forced to migrate in search of hope, a tragic consequence of modern humanity’s arrogance. Noah, in a parallel time, watches over this astonishing scene. In the foreground, masses of people are suffering, crushed together and struggling to move, while behind them a mystically beautiful blue moon has merged with Mother Earth. Noah says: “In my story, there was a lesson for all of you.”

From Mud to Sky, The Dove’s Return, 2024, Acrylic on canvas, 24” x 18” (61 x 46 cm)

Noted in sacred religious texts is the story of God creating the earth in seven days, as well as the story of the devastating flood that covered the earth. In the flood story, it is said that Noah sent a dove to search for dry land. After several days, the dove returned with traces of land on its feet, providing a moment of intimate joy and connecting humanity to earth through the bird. Land signifies life, plants, and food for humanity’s future. Depicted here is a dove flying over a field of cacti. In Arabic, the word for cactus is ‘Sabar,’ which means patience. This symbol of the “cactus” is profound in meaning and reflects what humanity must learn in order to save the earth: patience and the need to preserve the earth’s resources.

Hady Boraey was born in Behira, Egypt. He holds a PhD and MA in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts of University of Alexandria. As a lecturer in the Graphic Department at University of Alexandria, he specializes in illustration, drawing, manual design, painting, traditional mixed media and installation. Boraey has participated in numerous exhibitions both in Egypt and internationally, such as in the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Italy, UK, and Poland.

Boraey has won various awards and his work is held in private collections around the world. Through a distinctive painting technique, metaphorically and symbolically, he takes the viewer on a poetic journey to discover the unknown and to open new horizons. Often his subjects are very primal and deeply connected to nature. He has participated in several CARAVAN exhibitions, including winning first place in the “To Heal the World” exhibition.
