I’ve been researching the affect that social media has on us, the increase in social diseases, and how the Qur'an addresses social connection. In essence, social media is just a modern platform of connection and interaction created through technological advancement. I discovered three sections (ayat 11, 12 and 13) from Surat Al Hujurat in the Qur'an, that highlight the rules for proper social behavior in order to develop healthy relationships. They list six forbidden social behaviors: ridiculing, insulting, offensive nicknaming, negative assumption, spying, backbiting. These behaviors are acted upon all too commonly, both consciously and unconsciously, creating severe damage to one’s personality, life, and society. I view these behaviors as diseases that need to be treated.

To spread awareness, I created a medical box with fake plastic medicine to compare these bad habits to real diseases. In reality, these behaviors need to be treated spiritually rather than with actual medication. The box is designed to resemble the packaging of an anti-depressant; the colors, information, and layout are very similar. And it has a barcode with an expiration date. It’s advertising slogan is a call to the viewer to engage with its deeper meaning and acknowledge negative influences that work against true healing in our world.
