This mixed media work unites the East and the West through a surreal interpretation of the poem “Steps” by the German 20th century poet Herman Hesse. The theme of the poem reflects on the different stages of the journey of life and on how our ability to embrace each stage and new place is essential to inner growth and enjoyment, which is a common challenge facing all peoples. This work bridges the gap between the West and Islamic civilization by visually transferring the geographic origin of the poem to the cultural environment of the language I render it in. I employ humor to stimulate critical cross-cultural self-analysis.
